Dental Implants

Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.

A dental implant is actually a replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and are not visible once surgically placed. They are used to secure crowns (the parts of teeth seen in the mouth), bridgework or dentures by a variety of means.

When teeth are lost, the bone that supported those teeth is lost too. Placing dental implants stabilizes bone, preventing its loss. Along with replacing lost teeth, implants help maintain the jawbone's shape and density. This means they also support the facial skeleton and, indirectly, the soft tissue structures — gum tissues, cheeks and lips.

In addition to the skill and expertise of your dentist, your own body's natural healing abilities play an important role in implant dentistry. After the titanium replacement roots have been implanted, there is a recovery period lasting between two and six months. During that time, the jawbone grows naturally around the dental implants, securing them firmly in the jaw.

Once the implants have taken root, custom-crafted replacement teeth will be fixed to them. Through Dr. Summerlin's expertise in implant dentistry, and careful planning and design, dental implants are made to align perfectly with the rest of your teeth.

Dental implants help you eat, chew, smile, talk and look completely natural.
